CHAPTER ELEVEN
MARRIAGE!
Leo shook his head, barely able to believe he was fool enough to be fighting for it. Moreover, with a woman who looked like giving him as hard a time as Serena. Though, by God! he wasn’t about to be taken for a ride in this marriage.
If Teri agreed to it.
Which she ought to, if she had any sense at all.
Having reached the back door to the restaurant kitchen, he paused to let her precede him inside. She flicked a glance at him and her eyes had such a poignant look of vulnerability, he was torn between the urge to wrap her in his arms and promise her she’d be safe in his keeping, and a more savage impulse to shake her into getting her priorities right.
It was perfectly obvious she needed him. But was she fair-minded enough to admit that? No! One look was all it had taken him to know he had to step in and get some appropriate management in place.
Her face was drawn with fatigue, her hair—which she’d always kept stylishly trim—was dull and almost shaggy, and her ignorance about the potting mixture... well, she’d explained that but the explanation itself was a clear manifesto for his intervention.
“Dylan’s gone,” she commented, frowning at the clean and deserted kitchen. “He should have checked with me before he left.”
“He was tidying up when I arrived. Probably didn’t want to butt in to say goodbye,” Leo excused.
She nodded, still frowning. “I hope he didn’t overhear...” She sighed. “I guess they have to know I’m pregnant sooner or later.”
The sooner, the better, in Leo’s opinion. Then, at least, her staff could be watching out for her. He was sure she’d been on the verge of fainting earlier. He’d speak to Dylan himself about that. Speak to Dylan about more staff, too. The young chef might know someone who could fill in for Ten. Personal knowledge was better than advertising for help. In a small business like this, it was important for everyone to get on well with each other.
He watched Ten lift a key ring from a hook above the kitchen counter and proceed to lock the back door. Her baggy shirt somehow emphasised her fragility. She was losing weight instead of putting it on. When he’d held her close he’d felt the difference, though she’d still felt good. More than good.
As she checked that the lock was activated, his gaze dropped to her delectable backside, remembering the feel of her soft, sexy cheeks. The long shirt covered them, frustrating any visual pleasure, but he still stirred at the memory of how she’d responded to feeling him. At least his bed in this marriage shouldn’t be a bargaining couch. No way would he allow it to become one, either!
“Done!” She swung around, and strode off into the dining room, leaving him to follow.
Leo strolled after her, suddenly reminded of the last time Ten had led him to the front door of the restaurant, shutting him out on the street and letting her ex-husband in.
